What to do when you find yourself in an incredibly stressful situation at work
There can come a moment in business where you realise that the work situation you are in has become entirely untenable.
Very often the reasons behind this have absolutely nothing to do with you or the work that you are doing.
You have met with someone who is on a downward spiral for whatever reason and now you have become the subject of their wrath or aggression.
Often this can be due to the fact that they themselves are veering towards nervous exhaustion or as is commonplace in a corporate environment, burn out.
The dangers of remaining in the situation
Your intuition may be telling you from the first moment that you are in their company that the situation will only end in tears, however you try to plough on, keeping the situation as polite and professional as you can.
While there may be glimmers of civil behaviour, when you are dealing with someone who is veering towards exhaustion or burnout which is causing them to lash out, you will constantly feel as if you are walking on egg shells.
Do not fool yourself, this is not a tenable situation. If you are left in this situation for too long you will find that the position you have been placed in will begin to impact upon your health.
This requires that you take a strong stance at the earliest and either extricate yourself from the environment or make it clear that you will not put up with such rude and aggressive behaviour.
If this is a long term situation and you are and will be constantly working with the person who is lashing out, you will need to consider changing positions.
This may seem like an astoundingly strong statement; however, it is not stated lightly.
The impact upon your health
All too often people try to make the best of incredibly stressful work situations and keep their head down in the hope that the situation will change, although if most people are honest they know that it rarely does.
Many people try to remain in the position for security reasons, however if you lose your health due to a constant onslaught of stress and aggression, your security will be gone in any event and you will have also lost the most precious gift of good health.
Having the energy to make the change
The difficulty here is that if you proceed “down the rabbit hole” and remain caught up in drama for too long there is a danger that you will become too exhausted to make the changes that you need to make.
For example, if you listen to your intuition and the fact that you instinctively know that the situation cannot continue indefinitely, you can start looking for another position.
You can start quietly talking to recruitment people, perhaps making some discrete enquiries about whether there are any other projects in your company that you could be working on or other positions within the company that you could apply for.
You will have the energy to subtly and with grace speak to the people you need to speak to about the situation, while at the same time diplomatically deal with the protagonist of the aggressive and unacceptable behaviour.
However, if you remain in the situation without making any moves to try and get out of it, the stress of the situation will wear you down and impact your health to the point that all you will be able to attend to at best are your day to day tasks and will not have the energy to deal with the situation at all until it eventually becomes catastrophic.
