As my yoga teacher put it recently, “apologies we are running a bit late, it appears everyone is busting their ass trying to get to yoga class.”
When trying to relax becomes another thing on your schedule that you are not meeting and therefore feeling guilty about, it might be time to give yourself a break.
Can’t do an hour meditating with the serenity of a Buddhist monk? How does 11 minutes on the way into work sound?
This is a modified version of a Kundalini meditation known as a Kirtan Kriya (the full version is attached) the idea being do what you can on the train/bus/at the desk and then do the full Kriya when you have time.
Focus your eyes on the tips of your nose
While meant to be spoken out loud, this is unlikely to make you popular with your neighbours so just chant in your mind each syllable of the mantra Sa-Ta-Na-Ma as you alternate touching each finger to the thumb. So:
On Sa, you touch the tip of your index finger to your thumb.
On Ta you touch your middle finger with your thumb.
On Na you touch your ring finger with your thumb.
On Ma, the pinky finger with your thumb.
If you are in a noisy space, try some nice relaxing music in the background or try one of the free apps specially for the exercise such as the Kirtan Kriya Free Timer App:
If you want a visual for the Kriya see here
Do this for 3 to 11 minutes, inhale, exhale, and relax and arrive to work zen like and smug in the knowledge that you have just invested in your spiritual savings scheme – no guilt required.
