What is burnout?
When you are approaching burnout it is a sign that your body has had enough.
It simply will not put up with the stressful situation you are in anymore.
Your body is going to take you out of the situation one way or another either by mental breakdown, nervous exhaustion or health issues.
Your body will place you in a position where you will be debilitated to the point where you just won’t be able to continue.
Your body is not your enemy, it is simply trying to self preserve.
The absolute best thing you can do is to work with the signals that your body is giving you and put a plan in place to get out of that situation.
The experience needs to be reframed as a space of transition.
The writing is now on the wall and something has to change.
The key thing to remember is that there is that there is deadline to action.
Your body will not wait indefinitely if you are veering towards burn out.
The burnout plan
You have to put the new plan of action in play as soon as you possibly can.
If you do not do this and change direction while you still have the energy to do it, you will get to the point where you cannot change tack because you are simply too tired to do so.
There is a danger that if you do not listen carefully to the first signs of burn out and plough on you will become too exhausted to change anything.
All you will be left able to do will be to try and keep the balls in the air and your day to day checklist under control.
The difficulty with that and just being left with enough energy to simply attend to the day to day tasks is that you will not be able to get yourself out of the situation and simply keep veering towards burn out.
Extricating yourself from a potential burn out situation requires tact and a plan of action, both of which requires energy.
You will need to diplomatically make changes to your work levels.
You will need to diplomatically decrease the number of projects you are working on / hours you are working.
This requires that you have a number of tactful conversations with third parties.
It is very difficult to do this well if you are too tired and exhausted.
The idea is to cut back gently not to burn bridges.
Equally you may need to seek out alternative employment / means of income, both of which also require a certain measure of energy.
If you leave it too long and don’t put some form of plan of action into place you will become too exhausted to do so.
Equally remaining in a bad work situation could prove disasterous for your health.
Once you get very distressed it is very difficult to remove yourself from a situation without being emotional.
You want to try and form an exit plan before it comes to this.
